Phonics is taught daily and systematically in Years FS, One and Two and regularly (where needed) in Years Three, Four, Five and Six.
The spelling of ‘tricky words’ in particular (those that cannot be sounded out and must be learned) is embedded in daily Reading/Writing teaching. In the 2014/15 academic year, we ran our ‘Attack’ scheme to bring as many children as possible up to certain expectation of basic spelling. In 2015/16, based on the success of this, we are developing a more tailored approach to ensure that the teaching of spelling works alongside our Literacy focuses (as described above)
