Phonics and Spelling

Phonics is taught daily and systematically in Years FS and One and regularly (where needed) in Years Two, Three, Four, Five and Six.

Our Foundation Stage and Year One children are taught Phonics every day following the “Storytime Phonics” programme. This is a thoroughly engaging scheme that is built upon a foundation of high-quality story books which link to each and every sound (phoneme) that children need to learn in order to master reading and writing. The Phonic Fairy introduces new sounds and familiar words for children to learn and the Tricky Troll presents tricky words for sight learning.

Follow this link below for an introduction to Storytime Phonics:

Children in Years Two, Three, Four and Five have access to online spelling practice using ‘Spellodrome’

The spelling of ‘tricky words’ in particular (those that cannot be sounded out and must be learned) is embedded in daily Reading/Writing teaching.
Each year group are issued spellings and these are tested regularly.
